Conversion Rate
Conversion rate is the percentage of website visitors who complete a desired action, such as making a purchase, filling out a contact form, subscribing to a newsletter, or creating an account. It is calculated by dividing the number of conversions by the total number of visitors and multiplying by 100. A site with 10,000 visitors and 200 purchases has a 2% conversion rate.
Conversion rate optimization, commonly abbreviated as CRO, involves systematically testing and refining page elements, user flows, and calls-to-action to increase the percentage of visitors who convert. This includes A/B testing headlines, button colors, form lengths, page layouts, and checkout processes. Even small percentage improvements can have outsized revenue impact at scale.
For web development, conversion rate is one of the most critical metrics because it directly connects technical decisions to business outcomes. Page load speed measurably affects conversion, with studies consistently showing that each additional second of load time reduces conversions. Form validation UX, error handling, mobile responsiveness, and checkout flow design all have direct, measurable effects on whether visitors complete desired actions.
