GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of shaping your content so that AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews cite and recommend you. Where classic SEO tries to rank your page on Google's first results page, GEO tries to get your brand into the answer the AI generates for the user - often without the user ever clicking through to your site.

The difference comes down to how these systems consume content. A search engine ranks pages and shows ten blue links. A language model reads the text, summarizes it, and writes its own answer, in which it either mentions you or doesn't. What works: clear, factual statements that are easy to quote, a question-and-answer structure, specific numbers and dates instead of marketing fluff, and content that answers the query directly without padding around it.

In practice GEO and SEO overlap a lot. A well-structured, technically clean site that loads fast helps both. But GEO adds its own concerns: whether AI crawlers can even reach your content (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot), whether you publish an llms.txt file, and whether your brand is mentioned in the places models read - Reddit threads, comparison articles, industry discussions. Measuring GEO is harder than SEO because there's no single Search Console. You track whether specific assistants cite you across a set of test prompts, and you watch referral traffic coming from AI platforms.
