Unit Economics

Unit economics is the financial analysis of revenue and costs associated with a single unit of a business model, such as one customer, one transaction, or one subscription. It evaluates whether each unit generates profit after accounting for direct costs, providing a ground-level view of business viability that aggregate revenue figures can obscure.

Key metrics include customer acquisition cost, lifetime value, contribution margin, and payback period. The LTV to CAC ratio is particularly important: a ratio below 3:1 often indicates unsustainable growth where acquisition spending outpaces value generated. For SaaS and e-commerce businesses, understanding unit economics is essential for making informed decisions about marketing spend, pricing strategy, and growth targets. Web development teams benefit from understanding these metrics because technical decisions around conversion optimization, churn reduction, and user engagement directly affect the numbers.
